Our Activities & Events

Every week, AYFC has contact with hundreds of adults and children through various projects! Set up to introduce Ashby to God and get young Christians closer to Him. We have a good working relationship with several schools and churches. We are also involved in one-to-one work with young people providing a friend and mentor when they need it.

Out-of-School (top)

If you’re in years 7-9 and don’t mind flying vegetables, rude noises and getting wet occasionally; if you want to get to know God & other friends a lot better and don’t like sitting down, then Rock Solid might just be your pigeon. Most meetings are inside but sometimes we go out to enjoy LaserQuest, bowling, escape and evasion exercises and other such merriment. We usually play a lot of games and discuss things like Christmas, health, disability, the environment, sex, money, friendship & prayer. We’ve never had a vacuum cleaner related injury at Rock Solid!

This is a bit like Rock Solid only shorter and less messy. A chance to think about the most important stuff you can imagine whilst playing the daftest games you can imagine. There's usually a chance for you to show us how creative you are too - by making or performing something. You'll also be invited to take part in some of the other clubs and projects we organise beyond school such as Crackerteria. Then just before 1 o'clock we all go to eat lunch in the dining hall.

Apart from the pins and needles you get in your bum from sitting on a hard floor for 20 minutes, school assemblies are a marvellous time of day. When else do you get to think about the important stuff? Recently, because you asked us to, we've looked at swearing, encouragement, forgiveness, modern slavery, being a Christian and acceptance. The acceptance one had an exploding banana in it but I can't remember why. The best ones are the ones that are your idea or that you star in – so let us know if you have an idea or the urge to join us.

What is the purpose of Life? What are denominations? What happens when we die? Where have I left my toothbrush: These are (apart from the last one) some of the questions we have spent many lessons thinking about with RE classes. The great thing about being a part of RE is we get to learn as much as you do. At one of our visits to local church buildings that we organise for year 8 RE classes, I discovered that the proper name for the disk you see over pictures of Christians in stained glass windows is a nimbus.

Work in Other Communities (top)

We've discovered that local young folks like to take seriously the bit where Jesus tells his followers to go throughout the World and take the good news to all people. We've been helping them do this in a number of ways. Sometimes (usually for older teenagers) we organise trips to countries so we can do this personally. We've found that these trips don't just change the lives of the folk we visit. Local young people also run an annual cafeteria, Crackerteria, the proceeds from which pay for a street kids' centre in Moldova.
